An Atticus alternative for the work before formatting

Atticus is built for authors who already have a manuscript and want a focused formatting and export tool. Sheva begins earlier: it keeps research, structure, drafting, revision, and prepared editions connected to the same private work.

That difference matters more than a feature checklist. Pick the tool whose starting point matches the work you actually need to do.

Where Sheva starts

Sheva is a full pipeline from an early idea to a private reading edition:

  1. Capture loose material in Loom.
  2. Organize sources in Research and Nexus.
  3. Shape the book in Snowflake.
  4. Draft and revise in Studio.
  5. Prepare an immutable private PDF edition and accessible HTML reader.
  6. Keep that edition on your private Shelf.
  7. If you choose, stage an exact public preview and approve a release separately.

Preparing an edition never publishes it. Publication requires a fresh preview, a rights attestation, and an explicit publish action. Unpublishing removes the public listing while preserving the private work.

Where Atticus remains the stronger fit

Atticus is the sensible choice when your manuscript is already finished and your main need is established ebook or print-layout output. Sheva does not currently promise EPUB export, a printer-ready production package, or an operational print provider.

Atticus or Vellum serves you better today when any of those are a hard requirement.

What Sheva can prove today

Sheva can preserve a private manuscript, create a durable private edition, and show it in the owner's library. An author can build a public creator profile independently of any book, preview a bounded sample, and deliberately publish or unpublish an external offer.

An external offer sends the reader to the named provider. A purchase there does not create a Sheva order, receipt, entitlement, or library item. Native reader checkout and physical fulfillment remain closed until the commerce and provider gates pass.

Price

Sheva has a free entry point and a founding lifetime seat at $199. There is no monthly tier represented as available. A founding seat is product access; any future physical copy still requires an enabled print service, a separate proof review, and a quoted order.

Choose Sheva if

  • Your hardest problem is turning scattered material into a coherent manuscript.
  • You want the manuscript and its private editions tied to one owned work.
  • You want publication to be optional, explicit, and reversible.
  • You are comfortable using an external offer while native commerce stays closed.

Choose Atticus if

  • You already have a finished manuscript.
  • EPUB output is required now.
  • You need mature formatting templates or a printer-ready production export today.

FAQ

Does Sheva replace Atticus today? Not for every author. Sheva covers the work before and around a private edition. Atticus remains a better fit for established ebook and print-format export.

Can Sheva publish my private draft automatically? No. A private manuscript, a prepared edition, and a public release are separate records with separate actions.

Can readers buy a Sheva edition? Only an author-configured external offer can be shown today. External checkout does not grant Sheva access. Native digital and physical sales remain unavailable.

Does the founding seat include a printed book now? No print order is created by buying a seat. A personal-copy benefit can be used only after the print service is enabled and the member approves separate print files and a quote.
